Principal investigator
Dr. Locke D. Spencer
Associate Professor and Chair, Department of Physics & Astronomy, University of Lethbridge
Locke Spencer is an experimental astrophysicist working on instrumentation for far-infrared and submillimetre astronomy. He received his MSc (2005) and PhD (2009) from the University of Lethbridge under the supervision of Dr. David Naylor; his MSc thesis characterized the SPIRE photometer and his PhD thesis the SPIRE imaging Fourier transform spectrometer, both for the ESA Herschel Space Observatory. He then held a postdoctoral position at Cardiff University, working on the in-flight performance of SPIRE.
He returned to the University of Lethbridge in 2013 as Canada Research Chair (Tier II) in Experimental Astrophysics, a position he held until 2023, and established a laboratory testbed for far-infrared spatial/spectral interferometry. He is currently Chair of the Department of Physics & Astronomy.
